Miller Group has announced a record order book of 拢1.5 billion in construction, as the business returned to profit in 2012. The group reported profit before tax of 拢6.6 million in the year to 31 December, compared to a 2011 loss of 拢30.4m before exceptional items, which it described as 鈥渁head of expectations鈥. The results follow its 拢160m refinancing deal that handed more than 55 per cent of the family firm to outside investors, led by GSO Capital Partners 鈥 a subsidiary of US private equity giant Blackstone, in 2012. The group鈥檚 construction division produced a profit before interest of 拢3.2m (2011: 拢6.8m) on turnover of 拢259.4m (2011: 拢238.6m) which it said was 鈥渋mpacted by expensing upfront significant business development costs鈥.

Consultancy WYG's operating profit for the full year will be 10 per cent ahead of market expectations, it said today.The firm said it continues to be challenging in the UK, but that its business 鈥渁ppears to be stabilising鈥, with good progress in the main sectors of defence and justice and energy and waste. WYG said it has maintained a 鈥渇ocus on working capital improvements and significantly reduced overheads鈥. Overseas, it reported 鈥渄emonstrable progress鈥 in reducing WYG鈥檚 reliance on EU donor-funded work.
Bam Construction has won a 拢10 million contract to build two primary schools in Sheffield. The contractor beat three other bidders to win the 12-month project, which is due to begin in September 2013. The schools will be built in Shirecliffe and Fir Vale for Sheffield City Council to meet rising demand for school places in the city. Each will hold 420 pupils between the ages of 4 and 11 and need to be completed by August 2014 to coincide with the start of the school year.

Willmott Dixon has won two Camden hostel refurbishment jobs worth a total of 拢8 million, as well as a 拢16.3m contract to build 161 homes for Catalyst. The hostels will be remodelled and enhanced to create modern studio accommodation. Mount Pleasant in Holborn will see a mix of new-build and refurbishment to provide 50 en-suite bedrooms. The Holmes Road Hostel in Kentish Town, meanwhile, will be remodelled to provide a further 59 en-suites.
